Aurora

Aurora had a rocky start in foster care. She didn't eat or drink for eight days, and didn't use the litter box for a few more after that.

At first she hid on the chair, under the desk.

And then she moved to the futon mats under the bed, where she spent the next six weeks.

I borrowed a crate from Gifford and set it up with everything she needed, hoping that a smaller enclosed space would make her feel safer.

No dice. She showed no interest in spending any time there regardless of the time of day.

We set up a camera with a motion sensor, and found out that she was leaving her hiding spot only between midnight and 4am.

After about a month, I talked with a friend that has taken in a feral cat, and she suggested that I try a different strategy – keep the room door open, and just ignore her.

She slowly started coming out a little earlier (provided we weren't home for at least 12 hours), and sometimes staying out a little later.

And then she needed a booster shot. That's a whole other story.

Aurora is fostered in Cambridge, MA through the Gifford Cat Shelter in Brighton. Please contact them if you are interested in her!
